Eczema affects nearly 31 Million Americans in some form or degree.
Often we reach for the fixes we know about, inside our skincare cabinet.
But what else can you do to support your healing holistically? Well, here are 3 things to consider outside of your skincare cabinet.
1. Get some probiotics!
Yep, turns out probiotics are a great way to supplement your healing when it comes to dealing with Eczema flare-ups. There has been some developing research connecting probiotics to supporting good gut health.
Research has shown that Eczema in fact is a response to our immune system being in overdrive. There is also research linking Eczema to poor gut health resulting from inflammation in the gut that contributes to kicking our immune system into overdrive.
So how can you incorporate probiotics into your daily routines when you’re experiencing a flare-up?
- Reach for some Yogurt. Being lactose intolerant myself, I love Cocojune dairy-free yogurt full of good probiotics and none of the inflammation from lactose
- Kimchi! Our Korean fave is actually a great source of probiotics due to the fermented nature of this staple condiment for Korean cuisine.
- Take a daily supplement. Probiotic supplements in pill form like these from Sakara Life are vegetarian-based, gluten, nut, and soy free.
- Go for Physical over Chemical Sunscreen.

2. Go for Physical over Chemical Sunscreen
SPF is essential for so many reasons.
It’s literally the one staple that every Esthetician will drill into you is that you apply SPF every day! Every day.
But when you’re dealing with a flare-up or have sensitive skin in general, it may be a good idea to swap for a mineral over chemical sunscreen
Mineral sunscreens work on blocking UV rays at the surface of the skin. They often rely on zinc oxide as one of the base ingredients, and this is important because it also acts as an anti-inflammatory on the skin.
This means that it will help to keep redness inflammation at bay dampening the potential of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and giving your skin better conditions to undergo its own natural healing process.
3. Add a Humidifier to your bedroom!
As the humidity in the air drops during the winter months, forced heat indoors can through off the microbiome or natural barrier function of your skin. In turn, possibly trigger your Eczema Flare-up.
To create a more ideal climate while you catch up on your beauty sleep, try to add a humidifier to your bedroom space.
Elevate your sleep a little with some essential oils. Some Humidifiers give the option of adding essential oils to them, which is a nice touch of ambiance to make your nighttime routine extra special.
