The basic 3 steps to your skincare routine at home consist of cleansing, toning, and moisturizer.
The reason behind this is to first remove surface debris, environmental buildup, or skincare products.
Toning, many still misunderstand. It is not intended to further strip the skin of oils or dirt, toner is actually meant to PH balance your skin, after cleansing.
Cleansing your skin, even with just water changes the PH of your skin’s natural acid mantle.
Your acid mantle is what protects your skin’s ability to retain hydration while keeping bacteria out. It’s part of your skin’s microbiome, an important component of the overall health of your skin.
Beyond the basics in your skincare routine
After you have nailed down the basic foundation of your skin routine. It’s time to pick it up a notch.
It’s time to introduce your serums.
Serums are the target treatments of your skincare routine.
Serums are concentrated formulas of a combination of ingredients to target your specific skin concerns.
They can address, hydration, hyperpigmentation or active breakouts. Support graceful aging, protect your skin from premature aging and strenghtening your skin’s barrier function.
Now in order to get the most out of your skincare products, they have to be applied so they have the best chance of absorbing to their intended depths.
This is where knowing how to properly layer your skincare become so important.
How to layer your skincare, the right way.
When applying your serums the key is to start with your lightest weighted molecules before you finish with your AM or PM Moisturizer.
Because you can have serums that are both water and oil based you need to becareful to apply serums in order.
Starting with the water based serums first, apply your first layer while your skin is still a little damp and your pores are still slightly open.
This helps to draw the serum down into the layers of your skin and pull the moisture binding ingredients (humectants) along with it.
This leads to increased hydration and moisture retention that benefit the overall health of your skin.

Oil-Based Serums come next.
Your Oil based Serums are layered on top your water based serums. These should be applied by adding a few drops to the palm of your hands warming it up by rubbing it between your finger tips and then pressing it into your skin.
This next step is key.
Now, wait a minute!
You want to be able let your oil serums absorb into your skin for a minute so that it can sink in and follow the water-based serums.
Now you can take it one step further and add a suspension serum!
Suspensions serums are formulated to function just as the name implies. These products are meant to suspend over the skin act at the very surface level of the skin.
Again, let this set in and work its way into the skin before continuing to your final layer of your moisturizer.
A note for Topical Rx users:
If you are using a dermatologist prescribed topical this will typically go in after your cleansing and toning, but before moisturizer.
If you experience side effects of dryness or flaking from your topical, you can sandwich your topical cream in between your serums and your moisturizer.
Apply your topical and wait for about 20 minutes or even an hour or so before applying your nightime moisturizer to help offset any adverse side effects.
And now you’re on your way!
So there you have it, the correct way to layer your skincare so that you can get the most benefits out of your skincare routine at home.
