As we leave Fall to lean into the Winter Season, the cold can be tough on your skin.
Further into the fall, we embrace longer nights and shorter days, cooler temps, and unfortunately drier skin.
As the weather fluctuates we risk attacks on our immune system and the health of our skin. Our skin often has trouble keeping up with this rollercoaster of changes.
For our skin, this is due to the difficulty in retaining moisture, and hydration. The contributors can lead to a feeling in our skin of tightness, uncomfortably, and irritation.
Those who experience active breakouts, or those with Acneic Skin types can see increased inflammation as a result.
So we need some practices to help our bodies regulate and retain moisture more so than we do in the summer.
Here are 3 ideas on how to keep your skin happy.
1. Switch to a more hydrating cleanser at least once a day.
Help your skin regulate its moisture levels by giving it more hydration from the start of your routine.
Swap out that gel cleanser for a hydrating and moisture-focused one at least one cleanse.
This will still effectively clean your skin but won’t strip it of the natural oils it needs to stay balanced.
Pro tip: massage the product into your skin directly (dry hands to dry face).
This helps break up dirt and debris and gets the skin to start absorbing moisture.
Then add lukewarm water, massage in some more, and then remove.
2. Replace your body lotion with oil, right out of the shower.
No need to towel down (just be safe and use a mat under your feet), and shelve the body lotion for body oil.
Applied while your pores are still open and your skin is ready to drink up the moisture. You will get deep absorption of hydration that will last you longer throughout the day.

3. Exfoliate
Release the old to bring in the new.
Cold weather and winter mean dry skin piles up more readily.
More mature skin 55+ already has a slower rate of natural exfoliation.
The body with naturally thicker skin can experience a rougher texture, KP (keratosis pilaris).
That strawberry leg that you thought was just genetic? Yea but also it’s probably just KP!
Exfoliation in your weekly facial skincare routine, and in your bath + body routine, offer your skin the ability to shed the dead and make way for youthful cells to rise to the surface.
P.S. This also helps for high efficacy from your products during application. Protect that return on investment.
routine guidelines
→ Using a coarse bristle brush intended for dry brushing. Gently brush your skin before your shower to help stimulate blood flow, and release stagnant lymph fluid. This can also decrease the appearance of cellulite in addition to removing dead skin cell buildup. You want to start from your feet and slowly work your way up to your neck always moving strokes up toward the heart.
→ Using a natural plant exfoliating washcloth, like an Ayate cloth from the Agave plant fibers, provides gentle exfoliation while in the shower.
→ For the face: Use a gentle exfoliating polish or enzyme-based exfoliant to dissolve dry skin build-up. Start once a week if you are not currently exfoliating in your routine. Bump up to 2-3x if you are already exfoliating weekly but still experiencing dry skin build-up without redness, irritation, or thinning of the skin.
